Borealis – Reshaping the Future. – Art Basel in Miami Beach, founded in 2002, is considered America's leading art fair – an international platform where innovation, culture, and visual storytelling converge.
For Rivian's installation "Borealis," the space became the canvas for a fully integrated film and photographic work conceived and realized by Tobias Hutzler.
For this project, Tobias Hutzler developed the creative concept from the ground up for ABM 2025 – creating an immersive world of light and movement that reflects Rivian's spirit of discovery and understanding of color. As director, cinematographer, photographer, and creator of all the light installations, he combined every element of the work into a cohesive visual language.
"Filmed and photographed exclusively for the installation, Borealis blends precision, technology, and atmospheric minimalism. Within the vibrant context of Art Basel Miami Beach,
the work stood as a striking contrast: a controlled choreography of illumination and form, created to envelop viewers in a sense of discovery." Rockenfeller & Göbels.
The work's name is inspired by the Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights. It is also a special Rivian color: the Borealis paint is a limited-edition special color for the R1S (SUV) and R1T (Pickup) models. Tobias Hutzler was involved in the artistic staging to create an innovative visual representation of this color, a deep, metallic violet. By early 2026, the color had already been removed from the configurator—it is now only available in limited quantities. Attention: Collector's item potential!
It is also a special color. Tobias Hutzler is a German photographer and visual artist known for his elaborate, often large-scale productions featuring large groups of people, vibrant colors, and unusual perspectives.
Tobias Hutzler is represented by the agency ROCKNFELLER & GÖBELS. Ute Rockenfeller and Doro Göbels founded the agency Rockenfeller & Göbels in Düsseldorf in the mid-1980s. Since 1999, Doro Göbels has run the agency independently, and since 2022, she has shared the management with Luisa Lange.
