During nearly the entire month of May, 2021, French photographer duo Elsa & Johanna were on stay in northwestern Germany, visiting several villages in and around Moormerland, Lower Saxony. When Dutch photographer Geert Broertjes was diagnosed with cancer, his colleague Lotte Bronsgeest asked him if she could make a portrait of him while he was “still pure, without the presence of poisonous medicine in his body.” This was the start of the project ‘Outside Room 8’, in which Lotte and Geert used analog photography to visualize the experiences of a patient undergoing the three most common cancer treatments: chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery.
