Stockholm New - An orgy in Swedish style. Buch und Ausstellung zum legendären Magazin in der Stockholmer Thielska Galerie ..... und ganz, ganz viele Motive auf GoSee

The international, English language, multiple award-winning fashion and style magazine Stockholm New was published in a total of twelve issues over the years 1992-2002.

It’s a well-documented claim that the magazine was trendsetting, even groundbreaking, not only in Sweden but internationally. It’s also generally acknowledged that Stockholm New played a key role in the creation of a new contemporary “Sweden image” — that of a modern, cutting edge scene for fashion, trends, design, and a wide range of creative expressions.

In its day, Stockholm New also staged a number of equally trendsetting large-scale lifestyle events in Milan, Tokyo, New York, London, Paris, and, of course, Stockholm, in collaboration with official institutions such as the Swedish Foreign Ministry, the Swedish Institute, VisitSweden, the City of Stockholm, and others.

Now the best of the classic material from Stockholm New has been selected for publication in a massive (more than 600 pages hardcover) coffee table book, along with a great deal of newly produced exclusive material — fashion, nudes, landscapes, architecture, still-lifes, art, cultural history, portraits, historic photography ....

The book will be launched on June 4th at the esteemed and historic Thielska Galleriet museum in Stockholm’s Royal Djurgården Park (www.thielska-galleriet.se) — a great event that also marks the opening of the exhibition Stockholm New — national romanticism from double turn of the centuries: contemporary fashion photography meets classic masterpiece painting.

In this exhibition, monumental prints of Stockholm New iconic photographic images from 1992-2013 are juxtaposed with the museums unique, world-famous collection of Nordic and international masterpieces from the previous turn of the century — Edvard Munch, Vilhelm Hammershøi, Anders Zorn, Eugène Jansson, Bruno Liljefors, Carl Larsson, August Strindberg, Carl Fredrik Hill, Ernst Josephson, Prins Eugen, Paul Gauguin, Henri de Tolouse-Lautrec, and many more.

Among the contributing photographers in the Stockholm New book and exhibition are Mikael Jansson, Mario Testino, Sølve Sundsbø, Julia Hetta, Elisabeth Toll, Frederik Lieberath, Andreas Larsson, Pelle Bergström, John Scarisbrick, Dawid, Magnus Mårding, Gösta Reiland, Lee Jenkins, Jan Welters, Mikael Olsson, Enrique Badelescu, and John Akehurst.

The Stockholm New exhibition also features installations of Swedish and international contemporary art, fashion installations, and various events and happenings, both inside the museum and outdoors in the beautiful sculpture park.

“The idea of producing a Stockholm New book has been with us for several years,” says Christina Britton, Editor-in-Chief of Stockholm New, together with her partner and husband Claes Britton. “Stockholm New was big in its day, but time flies. Ten years is a long time in the fashion world. Now there are new generations that have never been exposed to this material. We think it’s worth showing it to them. From the beginning, our intention was to add just a bit of new content, but the new material has just kept growing and growing, as tends to happen. History is fun, but the present is even more exciting.”

If the plans for the book go back years in time years, the exhibition Stockholm New — national romanticism from double turn of the centuries: contemporary fashion photography meets classic masterpiece painting is a more recent idea which has evolved over a shorter period of time.

“It’s a thought that came up more or less by chance and which quickly took on a life of its own and expanded organically, just like Stockholm New magazine back in its day, and many other good ideas,” says Claes Britton.

“Thielska Galleriet has always been my personal darling among all the art scenes that I’ve visited all around the world. The vision of juxtaposing our photography with Thielska’s magic collection of turn-of-the-century art appeared natural and irresistible to me, since I’ve always loved this art profoundly.”

“Just like the artists of that day, our game with Stockholm New was always national romanticism — unreserved worship of our homeland with all its treasures, myths, dreams, and fantasies,” Britton adds.” I’ve always thought that fashion photography, at least of the grandiose, romantic kind that I myself prefer, has taken over something of the role that painting played at the previous turn-of-the-century — dealing exclusively with the beauty and the poetry, shamelessly disregarding the rest. Our grand vision is that some viewers may see both the photography and the paintings with fresh eyes.”

The book Stockholm New will be available in selected bookstores and other outlets worldwide, as well as online.
