Director team SOPHIA+ROBERT aka Sophia Magdalena Koegl + Robert Dziabel c/o DBC present their experimental film '399' on GoSee

SOPHIA + ROBERT present their new and very experimental film project 399 here on GoSee. They say: ‘399 deals with elements from advertising, feature and experimental films. This project is really important to us and we have been visualising it for a long time. It was vital for us to try out a new approach and terrain – the future, to be precise. Our previous films did not have a clear grounding in a specific time and were rather set in the past. The script for this project was longer originally, but we shortened it in order to create an abstract 8-minute world. It’s about protecting something, without knowing what it is exactly – or what is inside. To find out, you have to either wait or crack it open…’

And where did you meet? ‘We are a directing team and have been working together since 2011. We met during our studies in Stuttgart. Sophia read photography, while I dedicated myself to my film studies. We quickly realised that we have a similar eye and complimenting ideas and points of view. We initially produced short films and scenes and just experimented with the medium. That’s how it all began…’

And then you produced 'Nature Morte' - where does your journey lead you? ‘Yes this was our first scenic film. After we graduated, the best thing happened: Esther Kurle took us on at DBC Berlin. We know our work is quite specialised and we are not the most commercial directors – which makes working in advertising difficult. But Esther is very encouraging and believes in us. We love filmmaking and don’t like to differentiate between advertisements/ feature films/ art films… In fact, it’s much more interesting when those areas intersect. We are only 25 years old and like to try things out – but of course the feature film is our ultimate goal.’

Where do you show your films? Are you submitting any for the Saatchi & Saatchi Showcase? ‘We will definitely submit something, we received great feedback so far and we’ll give it a go!’.
