HELSINKI SCHOOL is the name of a group of photography artists who have studied, taught or graduated from Aalto University, School of Art, Design and Architecture since the 1990s and share a consistently conceptual approach. Although the school does not follow a uniform stylistic or thematic approach of any kind, topics regarding nature are a common denominator in many of the photo series by the HELSINKI SCHOOL artists.
“The Nature of Being is the sixth volume from the series of books about the Helsinki School with works by Ulla Jokisalo, Jorma Puranen and Elina Brotherus.” THE HELSINKI SCHOOL THE NATURE OF BEING, VOL 6 : Joakim Eskildsen from Hatje Cantz on the title : “It concentrates on bringing together the various approaches used by the School’s representatives to conceptualize nature visibly. The stated goal is not to limit oneself to purely physical depictions of animals, plants, and landscapes. Nature ought to be expressed through a different type of unit and with a new way of gauging time. Thus, the photographs reflect a Nordic sense about feelings of loneliness, jealousy, or desire. The works provide photographic insight into the complex horizon of emotions that characterize our individual views of nature. They do not portray landscape as such, but the world in which we live.”
“The Nature of Being Vol. 6” is appearing for an exhibition in Kunsthalle St. Annen, Lübeck (26 January – 26 April, 2020).
