Maison Marsil Cologne - Creative Space, Hotel Bar and Fireplace Lounge for Meetings, Workshops and Creative Teams

Located in the heart of Cologne, between Rudolfplatz and Neumarkt, boutique and design hotel MAISON MARSIL offers not only individually designed rooms but also inspiring spaces for creative encounters, meetings and events.

The charming Fireplace Lounge on the ground floor provides an intimate setting for meetings, interviews, castings, coaching sessions and small workshops for two to ten people. Natural daylight, individual interiors and the unique atmosphere of the listed historic building offer a refreshing alternative to conventional conference rooms.

Right next door, the open-plan Creative Space features a house kitchen and a small conservatory with olive trees. Filled with natural light, the space is ideal for team meetings, workshops, offsites, presentations and creative gatherings. Whether brainstorming sessions, editorial meetings or collaborative workshops, the focus is on exchanging ideas and bringing people together.

For larger events, the Creative Space, Fireplace Lounge and adjoining hotel bar can be combined to create a versatile venue for corporate get-togethers, intimate receptions, presentations, exhibitions or relaxed evenings after a production day.

MAISON MARSIL is housed in a listed building dating back to 1897 and has been family-run since 1999. Art, photography, design and a close connection to the creative industries have always been part of the hotel's identity. The spaces are available for hourly or full-day bookings. Meetings and events can also be combined with breakfast, coffee, snacks or an overnight stay at the hotel.

History
Maison Marsil is located in a historic, listed ensemble of buildings at Marsilstein in central Cologne. Parts of the preserved original features date back to 1897. The hotel’s name refers to the historic Marsilstein. As early as Arnold Mercator’s map of Cologne from 1570/71, the location appears under the name “Am marcellen Stein”. The area, which later also became known as the Eselsmarkt, was officially renamed “Place Marsile” – in German “Am Marsilstein” – in 1812 during the French period.
The name derives from the so-called Marsilstein, a remnant of the Roman Eifel aqueduct around which various legends developed over the centuries. During the Middle Ages, the stone was believed to be the tomb of the legendary Marsilius. According to legend, Marsilius saved Cologne from the troops of Roman Emperor Vitellius through a clever ruse. A large section of the surviving aqueduct collapsed in 1566; the remaining sections were removed during construction work in the 18th century. Marsilius is still commemorated today, among other places, by a depiction on the eastern façade of Cologne’s Gürzenich. The building ensemble survived the destruction of the Second World War.

In 1999, Cyrus C. Halabian and Frank Schmitz opened Marsil at this location. Initially operated as an apartment hotel and, for a time, in conjunction with a bar, the hotel expanded over the following years and evolved into today’s Maison Marsil boutique and design hotel.

Concept and Design
The interior design incorporates elements of the building’s historic architecture. Several floors were finished in terrazzo, referencing the original terrazzo floor preserved in the entrance hall from the building’s construction period, which bears the initials F. J. Blume.

Press
In 2024, German travel magazine MERIAN included Maison Marsil in its selection of seven exceptional hotels in Cologne. It particularly highlighted the combination of historic architecture and 1950s design elements, as well as the art and photography displayed throughout the hotel.

In October 2025, German magazine Stern also featured Maison Marsil in its city guide, “The Best Addresses for a 48-Hour Trip to Cologne.”

The founders are currently working on their second hotel: MIRA D’OR DE MARSIL in Tenerife. Coming soon!
