Franz Mangel is a photographer from Bavaria, rooted in Southern Germany and Munich, with a perspective that reaches far beyond. As a child, he lived in the United States for several years, later moving through Berlin, New York and Mexico City. Today, he is back in Germany. The camera has always been more than a tool – it is his access to the world. Without it, many encounters would never have happened, many paths never taken.
His decision to become a photographer came early, sparked by his first encounter with the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson at the age of 19. He went on to study cinematography in Berlin and later spent time at the International Center of Photography in New York. What matters most to him, however, is continuous practice: creativity is shaped through seeing, experiencing, and constant movement.
People are at the center of his work. Not staging for its own sake, but real encounters. His focus lies outdoors, on the street – where life unfolds unfiltered. Chaos is not an obstacle but part of the process. It is within these moments that images with a distinct voice emerge.
“I want to make necessary images. Images that help one understand another person. Images that one cannot forget once they've seen them.” - Franz Mangel
His style can be distilled into three words: longing, love, poetry. An emotional depth that operates quietly – and precisely because of that, resonates.
Franz Mangel does not photograph to provide answers, but to make visible the questions that often remain unheard.
