Photographer TIAN c/o UPFRONT accompanied the nonprofit organization SEAWATCH during their reconnaissance flights over the Central Mediterranean from Greece. “I would like to not have to be here.” A sentence often heard by Tian during this time.
Sea-Watch was founded as a civilian sea rescue organization in response to the failures of the EU and its Member States. According to official figures, over 21,000 people have died attempting to cross the Mediterranean since 2014. To find safety in Europe and claim their right to a fair asylum process, people see themselves forced to cross the Mediterranean in boats that are not seaworthy. Sea-Watch demands safe and legal entry routes as well as freedom of movement for all. No one should have to die trying to cross a border.
