‘Love and Death in Bali’ by Vicki Baum from the year 1937 is appearing this June with a new design at KIWI PUBLISHING. The book cover was illustrated by Gisela GOPPEL c/o 2AGENTEN.
She was the first media star of German literature, a star author of the Weimar Republic, and delivered material for Hollywood: Vicki Baum, who was born on 24 January, 1888, is considered one of the most successful German-language authors of the 20th century. She is the first author to be turned into a brand with a targeted marketing strategy, and she delivered one bestseller after the other – her novels reached a circulation of 500,000 books in Germany by 1932. Her international success ‘Menschen im Hotel’ paved the way for her in the US, where the novel was staged on Broadway under the title ‘Grand Hotel’ and was filmed shortly after with Greta Garbo. She started a new life with her family in Hollywood while, at the same time, embarking on her own to take the rest of the world by storm.
