In the category STILLS, the jury particularly noticed two photographers: Justin FANTL c/o GIANT ARTISTS from LA and Eva Roovers from Amsterdam. Both work closely at the intersection of art. Justin convinced with his fine line compositions and Eva Roovers with her imaginative arrangements and sculptures.
Eva ROOVERS flew in from Amsterdam to be at UPDATE in person. 'Sculptural Photography' is what she calls her type of photography. “My work is staged and consists of object photography. In the studio, I create colorful sculptures out of daily life products. Such as a dustbin brush, mirror, plant, cup or a lemon. These mundane objects are combined into monumental constructions before being photographed as spatial strategies such as the creation of assemblages of everyday objects or theatrical installations. Removed from their original context, they become alienated as formal experiments. In line with abstract works that anticipate on a long tradition within the visual arts where painters such as Malevich and Van Doesberg played an important role.” She works at her studio in Amsterdam for clients including KLM, Calvin Klein, ELLE UK, Tommy Hilfiger, or L'officiel de la Mode. Her artificial works can be seen at EVAROOVERS.COM and her contract works on STUDIO EVA ROOVERS.
The second GOLD award in the category STILLS goes to JUSTIN FANTL. The photographer living in LA studied in NYC and San Francisco and has already received several awards for his works. “I try to go with a gut feeling (at least at the outset). I like to throw things down (albeit carefully!).” His agency GIANT ARTISTS adds: “His enthusiasm spills onto his canvass in still lifes that capture a sense of wonder and humor. A perpetual observer and explorer, he is equally at home in the studio and outdoors. Whether seeking or constructing, there is often a nod to the surreal and a careful play of color and composition at the root of his imagery. If you look closely, there are imperfections in the work, and in some ways, those are the things that make the images feel a bit more real or tangible.”
Works by both photographers are presented here on GoSee. Who wants to find out more can gladly contact GIANT ARTISTS or Eva Roovers.
