Tom NAGY c/o MARLENE OHLSSON has directed his first film project in South Africa and will now offer the combination of film and photo from a single source. It started with a watch commercial, for which Tom directed and also photographed the stills. The photo and film shoot took place over the course of two days in four locations. Marlene Ohlsson and Tom NAGY present the project here on GoSee.
"My goal was to shoot a film with a commercial look film with the help of a DOP while taking the photos to go with it. Over the past years, I have often taken photos in parallel to filming and found that it makes it easier when both come from a single source. Both media have very different requirements, which cannot be easily reconciled on a set with a photographer and director at the same time. For example, a photo must be shot at a specific time of the day due to the lighting conditions, while the film crew is shooting completely different scenes.
Nevertheless, I was surprised how well it worked with the knowledge I had at the time. Since it was me who made the decision on when to shoot and when to photograph, I could use the light of day optimally for both media.
What I love about directing? Working with the actors and the dynamics of the medium film. We shot with Alexa Mini and old anamorphic lenses. The entire film technology offers exciting possibilities to create special looks. Even without mail. The film equipment industry is more resourceful than the photography industry. I love music and find it fascinating how you can influence the mood of the film very differently with music. The edit is essential for film and with Andreas Bardet as Editor, it was a lot of fun."
