The French-Austrian actress Roxane Duran made her debut on the big stage in 2009 with her role in Michael Haneke's award-winning film drama 'The White Ribbon – A German Children's Story'.
At the Salzburg Festival, she recently made her debut in the prestigious role of Buhlschaft in the traditional open-air play 'Jedermann' alongside Philipp Hochmair.
Photographer Wolfgang Zac visited the actress in Salzburg for the occasion – we're showing you the resulting portrait here on gosee.news.
The role of Buhlschaft at the Salzburg Festival is considered the most coveted and prestigious in the German-speaking theater world, even though the character has only very brief appearances and little dialogue in Hugo von Hofmannsthal's traditional play 'Jedermann'.
The word Buhlschaft is an archaic German term that is now used almost exclusively in connection with the play 'Jedermann'. It translates roughly as lover or mistress, or, as people affectionately say these days, side chick.
In interviews, Roxane Duran described her French and Austrian heritage as an exciting contrast to the traditional role. She approaches the character not as a mere appendage, but as a strong, multifaceted woman full of contradictions, seeking a balance between erotic affection, self-determination, and vulnerability.
Roxane Duran was born on January 27, 1993, in Paris. Her father is a Frenchman born in Spain, which is why her surname, Duran, is pronounced with a Spanish "r." Her mother is originally from Linz in Upper Austria. Roxane grew up completely bilingual in Paris. Until the age of four, she spoke exclusively German (with an Austrian accent) with her mother and French with her father. Today, she speaks fluent French, German, and English.
She has appeared in international productions such as the AMC series 'Interview with the Vampire', the series 'Marie Antoinette', and 'Narcissus and Goldmund'.
The Salzburg Festival was founded more than 100 years ago by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Max Reinhardt, and Richard Strauss and is considered one of the world's most important festivals of classical music and performing arts. It has been held every summer in July and August in Salzburg since 1920.
This year's Salzburg Festival season began on July 17 and runs until August 30, 2026. 'Jedermann' will be performed 16 times during this period.
