In summer 2020 the Finnish Museum of Photography will exhibit the works of photographer Sanna Kannisto (b. 1974), spanning a period of 20 years. This will be Kannisto’s largest exhibition to date. Sense of Wonder is a cross-section of the artist’s career, including her long-term photographic work at research stations in rainforests in South America and her more recent project at the Hanko bird observatory. The diverse nature of the rainforest and the migratory birds of the north are a mesmerising part of the exhibited works.
Sanna Kannistos Metier ist die Naturfotografie. Wie ihre Vorbilder sieht sie sich dabei sowohl als Wissenschaftlerin als auch als Künstlerin. Und tatsächlich steht ihr analytischer Blick ihrer Kreativität und Leidenschaft in nichts nach. Sie schafft Momente von außergewöhnlicher Schönheit, die zugleich Verborgenes ans Licht bringen. Für ihre Aufnahmen von Vögeln bedient sie sich einer eigenen Arbeitsweise. Sie nimmt die Tiere vor einem extra hierfür ausgeleuchteten, weißen Hintergrund auf. Herausgelöst aus ihrer gewohnten Umgebung tritt jedes Detail in unnachahmlicher Klarheit hervor und erlaubt ein genaues Studium. Zugleich entsteht eine eigene Bildästhetik: Das Gefieder erstrahlt hell, der Flügelschlag gewinnt eine majestätische Qualität und das tiefe Schwarz der Vogelaugen scheint eindringlich Richtung Kamera zu blicken. Die nötige Geduld, um diese Aufnahmen zu realisieren, hat sich gelohnt. Denn schöner als in diesen Aufnahmen lassen sich Vögel kaum darstellen.
Sanna Kannisto’s work has long been influenced by her collaboration with scientists and her interest in observing nature. Kannisto is, in a way, a scientist-artist who is compiling her own collection. In her work, she explores her role at the research stations working alongside the scientists, the ways in which information can be produced and interpreted and what tradition she is part of. A strong desire for personal, expressive narration is also present in her work. Concern for the state of nature the diminishing number of bird and insect species, for example, is an important subject for the artist. With her visually beautiful photographs, Kannisto strives to elicit an emotional reaction that may also influence the attitudes of her audience.
About - SANNA KANNISTO (*1974, Hämeenlinna, Finland) studierte Fotografie an der Turku School of Art and Communication und an der University of Art and Design in Helsinki. Sie ist in zahlreichen Ausstellungen und renommierten Sammlungen vertreten. 2017 gewann sie den William Thuring Prize der Finnish Art Society.
