Two of FRANK MEYL's photo series made into the Hasselblad Masters Award semi-finals in the ‘Fine Art’ category as well as the finals of the ‘Architecture’ category. By winning the Architecture category he was lucky enough to receive the Hasselblad Master prize.
A Hasselblad H4D-60 and two wide-angle lenses, including HTS tilt-shift adapter was provided by Hasselblad for the ‘Evoke’ themed photographic production. Frank Meyl chose Las Vegas as the location for his interpretation of the evoke theme: he photographed modern commercial buildings, highly specific and exclusively from the frog perspective of looking up, in order to highlight their tremendous character and to make aspects visible, which often remain unnoticed. Frank Meyls complex compositions thus offer us a unique view of the modern architecture of Las Vegas.
The inspiration was Heinrich Hoffmann's story ‘Hans Guck-in-die-Luft’ (‘Johnny Head-in-the-Air’), which was also the basis for the corresponding video shoot. The film follows Frank on his mission to make the unseen visible, alternately from his own perspective and the perspective of the viewer.
The Hasselblad Masters anthology volume 3 Evoke by teNeues was launched in line with the Photokina in Cologne including an official award ceremony. The accompanying photo exhibition of large-format prints went from there into the world with stops in Tokyo, New York City, Los Angeles, Berlin, London and Shanghai. During the exhibition of the Hasselblad Master Winners Tour in Los Angeles, Frank held a comprehensive seminar on his working methods and his creative work in front of a large audience at Smashbox Studios.
As a grand jury member, Frank makes his contribution in the selection of the new Hasselblad Master photographers, who will be announced early this year.
Born in Cologne in 1965, Frank Meyl gained a degree in architecture and was granted a scholarship, which brought him to Los Angeles, where he worked under Eric Owen Moss. After assisting several well-known photographers, he took a ‘leap of faith’ and became a photographer in his own right.
Since 2000, he’s worked as freelance across all continents.
Frank Meyl uses sleek lines and negative space to create images that have won over countless creatives and earned him dozens of clients around the globe. This architect turned photographer came to photography late but quickly created his blueprint of commercial success and is now beginning to make an imprint on the fine art world. Meyl’s architecture background becomes quite clear when browsing through his portfolio. His images are so clean and well composed they resemble the hyper-real perfection of architectural renderings. His technique reveals the same. Each image, like the construction of a faultless building, is put together piece by piece; and nothing is out of place. Now considered as one of the world’s most respected photographers, he’s a regular award winner. In 2011 alone he picked up prizes in eleven prestigious competitions and became a Hasselblad Master. He is a member of the BFF, the German Association of Freelance Photographers and Filmmakers. Frank lives and works in Hamburg and Los Angeles. He incorporates the complex lighting techniques of high-end car photography into a series of personal landscape images that have been winning attention from the press and public alike.
Artist Statement - As a photographer, I am using my personal interests, curiosity and connection to the subject to bring out its hidden qualities and values. When it all works out, you end up with an image, that moves you emotionally and still leaves questions unanswered and lets the viewer dream a little. Photography is almost like alchemy to me, where you try to turn something ordinary into something special by looking for its magic.
