In 'Whitening Heights', Sandro Livio Straube weaves photography and way of life into a quiet, contemplative exploration of the alpine landscape. Since 2015, he has been creating an ongoing series in Val Lumnezia – the “Valley of Light” – that speaks of deceleration, desaturation, and a heightened sense of presence.
Bathed in the sun-bleached clarity of the mountains, the images – both in black and white and in color – pare the world down to its essentials. Straube’s work captures the fragility of all living things, the impermanence of human traces, and the passage of time. The camera becomes a tool of mindfulness, turning seeing into an act of reflection.
Three accompanying texts delve into different aspects of this photographic practice. Interwoven passages in Romansh and Swiss German convey the atmosphere and rhythm of life in this unique alpine valley – calm, luminous, and quietly profound.
