"Every illustrator has their own story, a personal goal and an individual style. What's most important is that everyone does exactly what they want – because we can only be successful in what we our passionate about." says illustrator and visual designer Jaye Kang from Düsseldorf, who had his first commission at the age of eleven and today works for international brands such as NIKE, Gap and Disney. In his work, he usually uses bright colors, shapes and motifs, which he combines with lots of imagination and dynamic.
Ever since his early childhood, drawing has been the great passion of Chongqing-based artist Jaye Kang. Always focused on dream of publishing a picture book illustrated by him, he participated in various comic book contests already early on – and even took home a few prizes. The first magazines and brands soon became aware of him, and he received his first commission for a comic magazine at the early age of eleven.
This marked the beginning of his career as an illustrator, which he consolidated with a one-year drawing course in Beijing. Then came several advertising jobs, and Jaye quickly discovered his passion. "The fact that I liked these jobs so much was one of the reasons I decided to study," he explains. At the age of 23, he was then drawn to the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen where he studied Communication Design/Illustration.
"I like to draw abstractly and work in my illustrations mostly with patterns and textures," he tells us. Among his favorite motifs are animals, nature and monsters, but he also enjoys "unimaginable stories" as he refers to them. In addition to the colorful, imaginative motifs, the bright colors immediately catch the eye in his pictures: "The selection of colors is very important to me because colorful work instantly puts you in a good mood," says Jaye.
