Navigating the Future - In ein ganz „spaciges“ Metier durfte Marcus c/o ARTMOS4 für ein Projekt des Kunden DLR/Gesellschaft für Raumfahrtanwendungen eintauchen. Im Kontrollzentrum in Oberpfaffenhofen steuern und überwacht die DLR den Betrieb von Galileo – Europas globalem Satellitennavigationssystem. Die Räumlichkeiten sollten entsprechend dieses Themas verschönert werden.
Galileo ist ein weltweit nutzbares Navigationssatelliten- und Zeitgebungssystem, das von der Europäischen Union betrieben und finanziert wird. Zuständig für den Galileo-Betrieb ist die Agentur für das Europäische GNSS, die ihren Sitz seit 2014 in der tschechischen Hauptstadt Prag hat. 28 Satelliten des Systems befinden sich im Orbit, wovon 22 in Betrieb sind (Stand Mai 2021). Galileo ist seit dem 15. Dezember 2016 für jeden frei nutzbar und kann von allen modernen Chipsets (z. B. in Smartphones) empfangen werden.
Die EU schreibt : "Galileo is the European Union's Global Satellite Navigation System (GNSS). Sometimes called the ’European GPS‘, Galileo provides accurate positioning and timing information. Galileo is a programme under civilian control and its data can be used for a broad range of applications. It is autonomous but also interoperable with existing satellite navigation systems. At the moment, the Galileo constellation consists of 26 satellites.
Many sectors of the European economy rely on precise localisation. The market for satellite navigation services has been growing steadily and is expected to be worth €250 billion per year by 2022. Today, around 7% of the EU economy is dependent on the availability of global navigation satellite signals. This includes transport, logistics, telecommunications and energy. Our goal is to put the European Union on par with others, as several competitive systems are being built at the same time: Glonass in Russia, Beidou in China and the next generation of GPS in the USA."
Hauptverantwortlich für den Galileo-Betrieb ist seit 2010 die Spaceopal GmbH in München. Es handelt sich um ein Gemeinschaftsunternehmen der DLR Gesellschaft für Raumfahrtanwendungen in München und dem italienischen Raumfahrtunternehmen Telespazio Spa mit Sitz in Rom, welches wiederum ein Joint Venture der italienischen Leonardo S.p.A. und der französischen Thales Group ist.
