The exhibition "In Love with Photography" presents the work of Volker Hinz from a unique perspective. The focus is not on the iconic figures in front of the camera, but on the people behind it. For decades, he met and photographed some of the most influential photographers in the history of photography.
The long-time Stern magazine photographer captured them all on camera – whether at official events or in the intimate setting of their homes: Ansel Adams, Richard Avedon, Peter Beard, Alfred Eisenstaedt, F.C. Gundlach, Annie Leibovitz, Peter Lindbergh, Lee Miller, Helmut Newton, Irving Penn, Sebastião Salgado, and many more.
The exhibition is based on the photobook "In Love with Photography," which the publisher EDITION LAMMERHUBER produced in collaboration with Volker Hinz. It contains a true treasure trove of photographic history, waiting to be discovered in Volker Hinz's archive. By bringing his work to light, a collection of the most renowned photographers of the second half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century was created. With a text by Peter-Matthias Gaede.
Volker Hinz lived for his passion: photography. He sold his first pictures at the age of 20, and at 24 he became head of the Sven Simon photo agency in Bonn, before joining Stern magazine in Hamburg in 1974, where he decisively shaped the magazine's visual identity for forty years. Hinz created an extraordinarily extensive body of work, for which he received numerous awards. His work has been shown in over 60 exhibitions to date. Volker Hinz died in 2019 at the age of 72.
Peter-Matthias Gaede studied social sciences in Göttingen and graduated from the Henri Nannen School of Journalism. After three years at the Frankfurter Rundschau, he joined GEO magazine as a reporter in 1983 and served as its editor-in-chief from 1994 to 2014. He was also editor-in-chief, and later publisher, of GEO WISSEN, GEOlino, the GEO Specials, and other GEO spin-offs.
Gaede has received numerous awards, including the Reinhard Wolff Prize and the Egon Erwin Kisch Prize. He is a member of the board of trustees of the Körber Foundation, the board of trustees of Reporters Without Borders, and the Academy for Journalism. Since 2014, he has also served on the board of UNICEF Germany.
The exhibition runs until March 26, 2026, at the FREELENS Gallery, Alter Steinweg 15, 20459 Hamburg.
