It's a crazy world we're living in... For 30 years, fans have been puzzling over what Jamiroquai singer Jay Kay—known for his unique voice as well as his oversized hats—seems to be reaching for in the music video. The BEEFEATER campaign now playfully reveals the answer: He was trying to get his hands on a bottle of Beefeater 0.0% the whole time.
The Hamburg-based Retouched Studios is the renowned post-production agency responsible for the high-end image editing and retouching of Beefeater 0.0%'s worldwide print and advertising campaign. The agency in charge was Lucky Generals, and the image was photographed by Tom van Schelven.
Retouched Studios is known for its "Natural Retouching" philosophy. The goal is to make images appear extremely fresh and sharp without them looking artificial or computer-generated. Perfect for the campaign, which—like the original—was created entirely without computer effects (CGI) or AI.
Since the campaign set was built entirely analogously from real, mechanically movable walls and floors, Beefeater and Jay Kay are using their own social media channels (such as Instagram and TikTok) to share viral behind-the-scenes clips. This highlights the craftsmanship behind the "Virtual Insanity" remake.
The campaign also deliberately taps into the current trend of so-called "zebra striping". Zebra striping refers to the practice of consciously ordering an alcoholic and a non-alcoholic drink alternately during a night out, instead of sneaking a glass of tap water like we used to.
The agency behind the campaign says: "We thought the 30th anniversary of Virtual Insanity was the perfect moment to finally set Jay Kay free from that little white room. Free to wear more hats than ever before. Because ironically, when you drink Beefeater 0.0, you get more." Shelley Smoler, CCO and Damien Le Castrec, CSO Lucky Generals.
“This year marks the 30th anniversary of Virtual Insanity and as a prediction of the future it wasn’t too far off. Recreating the video with Beefeater 30 years on has been a genuine full-circle moment, showing fans they can get more out of this vibrant city with Beefeater 0.0%.”Jay Kay, singer.
Beefeater 0.0% is an alcohol-free alternative to classic gin. It's based on the original Beefeater London Dry Gin recipe. Its flavor profile offers aromas of citrus fruits and juniper. It's not about deprivation, but balance: the majority of buyers of alcohol-free alternatives (over 90%) don't abstain completely. They are people who drink alcohol but want to control their consumption flexibly and intelligently.
The global premiere event for the campaign was celebrated in London (Shoreditch). The campaign is currently running heavily in the UK, as both Beefeater and Jamiroquai are Londoners through and through.
Sunshine symbolizes happiness – and so it's no coincidence that Spain and Italy are the primary launch markets for the physical billboard and outdoor advertising. Large displays and urban advertising spaces in these major cities showcase Jay Kay in its signature "Moving Room" design. Spain was also the first test market for the product.
And perfect timing: Jamiroquai is releasing a new album! It is the band's ninth studio album and their first new work in almost a decade.
Jamiroquai previously signed a worldwide record deal with BMG on February 25, 2026. The move to the new label marks the end of an almost ten-year hiatus since their last studio album, 'Automaton', which was released on Virgin EMI.
