With White Nights in Wonderland, Feng Li invites visitors at Fotografiska Berlin into a world of absurd everyday fragments and enigmatic encounters – a creative vision that aligns seamlessly with Fotografiska’s mission: to connect cultures and spark curiosity.
From his hometown of Chengdu to Tokyo, from Paris to Shanghai, the photographer is celebrated worldwide for his distinctive visual language, which has earned him acclaim in both street and fashion photography. Against the surreal backdrop of global metropolises, his vibrant tableaux capture fleeting yet mysterious moments, freezing the absurdities of daily life in the bright glare of a flash that blurs the boundary between night and day.
Feng Li: White Nights in Wonderland at Fotografiska Berlin is curated by photography expert Holly Roussell and brings together around 150 photographs from the past two decades – from iconic key works to images offering fresh insights into Feng Li’s ever-evolving visual language.
„In a society overwhelmed by constant image-making, Feng Li’s photographs stand out for their ability to uncover the surreal truths hidden in plain sight. With a sharp eye for irony and the poetic potential of colour, he draws meaning from even the most unassuming details.“ Holly Roussel
„Feng Li’s photographs present the world in a new way, with his singular approach to revealing what is special in the mundane.“ Jessica Jarl, Global Director of Exhibitions at Fotografiska
Feng Li was born in 1971 in Sichuan. His unmistakable visual language has made him one of the most compelling voices in contemporary Chinese photography. His accolades include Best Photographer at the 2012 International Photo Biennale in Jinan, the Grand Jury Prize at the 2012 Lianzhou Photo Festival, and the Discovery Award at the 2017 Jimei × Arles International Photography Festival in Xiamen. Editorial features for Vogue and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as well as collaborations with brands such as Louis Vuitton further demonstrate Feng Li’s ability to move effortlessly between media work and high fashion.
