Every designer wishes for endless inspiration. Up and coming designer MAX. TAN, however, has made the search for infinity in fashion the concept behind his in fashion in his Spring/Summer 2015 collection. The abstract was to be expected, but the concept sheds light on everything possible and impossible, the limitless, the unbound and the unconventional. Clothing that does not have a clear end? We were intrigued. GoSee takes a look at ‘Infinity’.
There are no clear seams, there is plenty of volume instead. Each piece is a hybrid – part coat, part blouse, also dress and skirt – embracing the body in interesting variations. A shirt blouse dress, that cleverly doubles up as a jacket, a two-piece with a design that can be seamlessly transformed into a one-piece. The designs are frequently interspersed with a signature curved silhouette: the sign of infinity. One might be fooled into thinking we are talking about art or sculpture here, however we are in fact talking about fashion, though it is a carefully practised balancing act, walking the tightrope.
A balancing act that Tan, the designer from Singapore, has perfected. He sees himself as more of a clothing engineer than a fashion designer. Since founding his label in 2010 he has successfully been translating his Asian heritage into innovative designs with an abstract conceptual language. His geometric structures and the subtle colour palette, complex proportions and avant-garde designs form part of his distinct signature look.
