During the opening week of this year’s Rencontres d’Arles, Kehrer Verlag presents the group exhibition New York Trilogy at Kehrer Arles Plus. Bringing together works by Nina Welch-Kling, Jens Krauer and Mario Schneider, the exhibition explores New York through three distinct photographic voices shaped by different cultural, historical and personal experiences.
While all three artists take the city as their point of departure, their work unfolds in remarkably different ways. New York Trilogy reveals how New York can be read simultaneously as an urban landscape, a repository of collective memory and a stage for individual narratives. Shared themes of public space, human interaction, memory and urban transformation connect the artists’ perspectives while highlighting their unique visual languages.
Jens Krauer’s photographs emerge from a long-term engagement with public space and street life. Developed over many years and across numerous international cities, his work focuses on the complex choreography of human presence within contemporary urban environments. Nina Welch-Kling approaches the street through a poetic and conceptual lens, while Mario Schneider brings a cinematic sensitivity to atmosphere, narrative and the quiet moments that often unfold unnoticed within the city.
Together, the three positions open up a multifaceted dialogue on street photography as a medium of observation, visual memory and storytelling. The street becomes more than a documented location; it transforms into a space where fleeting gestures, emotional traces and personal histories intersect.
All three photographers have published monographs with Kehrer Verlag. New York Trilogy marks the first time their works are presented together in this constellation, highlighting the diversity of contemporary photographic approaches to one of the most photographed cities in the world.
The opening reception takes place on 8 July 2026 at 5:00 pm at Kehrer Arles Plus, 28 rue de la Liberté, Arles. Following the opening, publisher Klaus Kehrer and curator Sabine Schnakenberg will discuss the exhibition and the artistic positions represented.
The exhibition will be on view through 4 October 2026.
