Back on track – Robb Report Germany covers the modern-day comeback of the historic British motorcycle brand Norton under the leadership of the Indian automotive group TVS Motor Company. The feature was photographed by Benjamin Monn.
The photo spread shows Simon Skinner, Norton Motorcycles’ Head of Design, alongside the exclusive Norton Manx R First Edition superbike. Production of the bike is strictly limited to a small run of just 150 numbered units worldwide, available for purchase exclusively by selected collectors via personal invitation.
Norton was founded in Birmingham in 1898 by James Lansdowne Norton. Initially, the company manufactured only bicycle parts, but began producing its own motorcycles in 1902. Norton quickly became synonymous with British racing. In 1950, the company revolutionized motorcycle engineering with the introduction of the "Featherbed" frame; it offered handling that was unrivaled at the time and turned the Norton Manx racing machine into a legend.
After years of decline, the Indian two-wheeler giant TVS Motor Company acquired the bankrupt business for £16 million in April 2020. TVS is one of the world's largest motorcycle manufacturers. Subsequently, TVS invested over £200 million into the brand, building a state-of-the-art factory and headquarters in Solihull, England, and recruiting top-tier engineers.
Today, Norton no longer views itself as a mass-market manufacturer, but rather as a luxury British premium boutique brand.
