LEXUS International commissioned the transportation photographer with a gigapixel panorama of a buzzing metropolis. The image will be printed 14 x 3 metres in photo quality and will look as detailed as a museum print, which of course is a tough technological challenge.
Daniel decided on a location in Shanghai and captured the picture with a telephoto lens in five series, each containing 35 images. Ultimately this produced 175 single images, which the team will construct and assemble into one coherent picture. Daniel explains: “this technology requires the perfect conditions, in order for it to work properly. There are lots of potential issues I can’t control on set, such as the win, a sudden traffic jam etc. If just one of the pictures in the series contains a mistake, the puzzle collapses and the volume of data is really extraordinary as well. That night it was very windy and when you are standing on a rooftop on the 22nd floor, a blurred picture is a likely outcome. We ended up transporting a large old wardrobe to the top of the roof and secured it there as a windbreaker. It sounds odd, but it definitely did the trick!”
Daniel already used the camera equipment several times. The final picture has a resolution of over 100,000 pixels and is thus the largest ever photographed panorama of Shanghai. A world record! GoSee member SCHOTTPHOTOIMAGING expertly carried out the post-production.
