Vienna Airport celebrated its 70th birthday on 1 January 2024. To mark the occasion, the airport invited eight photographers under the artistic direction of award-winning publisher and photographer Lois Lammerhuber to accompany and document the life of this very special place for 24 hours in order to honour those without whom this technical marvel would not function.
From 3 a.m. to 3 a.m., people were captured on camera in their hustle and bustle on the airport apron and the runways, during emotional farewells and greetings in the terminal, through to quiet moments and everyday work: interesting glimpses behind the scenes, facts worth knowing and pure emotion!
‘Once you have experienced flying, you will walk the earth forever with your eyes fixed on the sky. Because that's where you've been and that's where you'll always be drawn back to.’ From the TV documentary I, Leonardo da Vinci, 1965
The book ‘The Dream of Flying’ shows what achievements people are capable of when they are driven by zest for action, curiosity and a pioneering spirit. For the pioneers, failures were not defeats, but steps towards achieving their goal. Perseverance was their strength. The dream of flying is proof of what belief in what is possible can achieve. Every take-off, every flight, every landing is a reminder of this. #
Aviation has a history in Austria : airships and the first motorised planes such as the Etrich Taube, which were built in Fischamend - near today's airport site - at the beginning of the 20th century, were considered the best in the world. The ‘Royal Airforce Base’, which was handed over to Austria in 1954, was the beginning of Vienna International Airport. Today, around 80 airlines fly from here to more than 200 destinations in 70 countries worldwide.
In his text, the globally successful author Thomas Brezina gives a historical outline of flying itself, from Icarus to the Wright brothers to the Austrian pioneers of flying, and provides information in clever and humorous captions about what happens at the airport 24 hours a day. In addition, an extensive, informative chronology, which accompanies the book, documents the 70-year history of Vienna Airport.
