There is a time for creative ideas – and a time to act. And even if it almost seems too late: we are siding with the indigenous tribes and say no to Belo Monte Dam!
Tribesman Raoni burst into tears when he heard that Brazil’s president Dilma den Bau had given the green light for the construction of the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam in spite of all the protests, supported by over 600,000 signatures.
It is a death sentence for the people living on the large bend of the River Xingu. Belo Monte would flood around 400,000 hectares of rainforest, an area larger than the Panama Canal. 40,000 indigenous and local populations would be forced to leave their ancestral homes and the natural environment of countless animal and plant species would be destroyed. All this to produce electricity, more easily, effectively and, most importantly, profitably for investors.
Help us spread the Kayapó tribe’s word around the world and hopefully achieve a last minute rethinking of the entire project. How? It’s easy, just sign this petition: amazonwatch.org/take-action/stop-the-belo-monte-monster-dam
