The Paris Photo Saint-Germain Festival enters its fourth round. From 7 through 22 November, the event brings together more than 40 galleries, institutions, cultural offices and bookstores on the left side of the Seine for a photographic promenade. The program includes exhibitions, screenings and meetings, all selected by a committee especially created for the 2015 event. The festival was founded in 2010 by Juliette Aittouarès, Director of the Galerie Espace 54, who unfortunately passed away last year. Amongst the participating exhibitors are the Galerie Catherine & André Hug, Atelier Néerlandais, and Musées d’Orsay et de l’Orangerie, L’Atelier d’Artistes, Galerie Chevalier, Galerie Claude Bernard, Institut hongrois, and Editions Photosynthèses.
GoSee spoke with Aurélia Marcadier, who is coordinating the festival together with Virginie Huet.
Is there a focus or a special theme in this years edition of PHOTO SAINT GERMAIN? Unlike the previous years, we did without a specific topic. In 2015, our top priority was the quality of the works displayed.
A la différence des autres années, nous n’avons pas souhaité imposer aux participants de thématique particulière. Il nous semblait primordial que la qualité des projets d’expositions soit le seul critère de sélection.
The official festival motif was created by Laurent Champoussin. Why did you choose the artist and his motif? We´ve followed Laurent Champoussin´s work for several year and value his works all around the topic 'Portrait' very much. Consequently, we gave him carte blanche for our official visual with only one condition: his vision of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. His choice was a tribute to Helmut Newton, who already captured the mood of the Rue Visconti 40 years ago. And we really liked the idea of a photographic allusion.
Nous suivons Laurent Champoussin depuis plusieurs années et nous aimons beaucoup son travail autour du portrait. Nous avons choisi de lui confier une carte blanche pour le visuel officiel avec pour seule directive qu'il nous livre sa vision de Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Il a choisi de rendre hommage à Helmut Newton qui avait, quarante ans plus tôt, capté l’ambiance de la rue Visconti. Nous tenions beaucoup à cette idée de résonance contemporaine face à une photographie plus historique.
Your highlights this year?
The festival, of course, has a very specific context. It is a festival de Quartier and is about our district. Photo Saint-Germain sees itself as a parcourse, a route, a small photographic journey. There are many locations with exhibitions as well as many different approaches to the festival: Presented are topics such as women photographers, reviving old techniques as well as historical figures in photography, or even young creatives. We also offer various dates/events: Two movie matinees at the movie theater Etoile Saint-Germain-des-Prés, a conference on 'the printed page' in cooperation with Polycopies, or about 'the photographic collection' in partnership with The Eyes and Herez, our main partners. Photo Saint-Germain also sees itself as a platform which offers the opportunity to reflect on new challenges in contemporary photography.
Le festival se déploie sur un territoire spécifique : nous sommes très attachées à l’idée d’un festival de quartier. Photo Saint-Germain se conçoit comme un parcours, un itinéraire. Il y a beaucoup de lieux mais plusieurs portes d'entrées pour ce Festival : Les femmes photographes, le renouveau des techniques anciennes, la redécouverte des grandes figures de l'histoire de la photographie, ou encore la jeune création. Nous proposons aussi plusieurs rendez-vous : deux matinées de projections au cinéma Etoile Saint-Germain-des-Prés, une conférence sur la page imprimée en collaboration avec Polycopies, ou encore sur la collection photographique en collaboration avec The Eyes et Herez, notre partenaire principal. This will be the 4th edition of Photo Saint-Germain Festival. For what reason you started with the festival and what is your resume after four years?
That's right, it is the fourth consecutive year, but the first in which I share the task of coordination with my partner Viginie Huet.

What “secret missions” can we expect this year?
If I understand the question correctly, my answer for you would be the most unusual and unique opening of the two photo studios Philippe Chancel et Frank Perrin, which are located in the neighborhood.

Together with Virginie Huet you are responsible for the program. Do you choose the participating galleries and art spaces or how does it work?
We were supported by a jury which helped us select candidates. This year, it was made up of five experienced personalities, who each stands for a specific discipline in the world of photography or the picture: Jeanne Fouchet Nahas, Deputy Editor Connaissance des Arts, Caroline Géraud, Art Buyer, Hélène Giannecchini, writer and independent curator, Luce Lebart, responsible for the collections of the Société Française de Photographie, and Chantal Nedjib, founder and CEO of the agency L'Image par l'image.
Nous nous sommes entourées d’un jury chargé de statuer sur les dossiers de candidatures. Il était constitué cette année de cinq personnalités représentant chacune une discipline du monde de l’image : Jeanne Fouchet-Nahas, rédactrice en chef adjointe des hors-séries de Connaissance des Arts, Caroline Géraud, acheteuse d’art, Hélène Giannecchini, écrivain et commissaire indépendante, Luce Lebart, responsable des collections de la Société Française de Photographie, Chantal Nedjib, fondatrice et présidente de l’agence de conseil en communication L’Image par l’image.
Your festival starts one week ahead of Paris Photo. Do you exchange ideas with PARIS PHOTO or do you work together in some other way?
The month of November in Paris is traditionally dedicated to photography – and we surely benefit from the dynamics of Paris Photo, but we do not work together on anything specific.

What can we expect from the photographers night on the boat on 13 November?
We were invited to present a slide show of artwork from the photobooks shown at Photo Saint-Germain. And Polycopies, the Salon of independent publishers who organized the evening, has also prepared some other nice surprises for the evening!

You are an independent curator and co-founder of TEMPLE, an exhibition space for contemporary photography in Paris. Could you tell us a little bit more about your work? Anything else you want to share with us?
I founded Temple together with three others in 2013, with Valérie Fougeirol, Pierre Hourquet and Anna Planas. We wanted to offer an alternative to the classic gallery and initiate a platform which accompanies young artists. Today I coordinate the festival with Virginie Huet, and we are currently in the process of establishing a structure which allows us to develop new projects, particularly with regard to curation. The next event will take place in the spring of 2016 together with Laurent Champoussin.
J'ai fondé ce lieu avec 3 autres personnes en 2013 avec Valérie Fougeirol, Pierre Hourquet et Anna Planas. Nous voulions proposer une alternative à la galerie "classique", créer une plateforme d'accompagnement aux jeunes artistes. Aujourd'hui, je m'occupe du Festival avec Virginie Huet et nous allons monter une structure pour développer d'autres projets notamment de commissariat. Le prochain aura lieu au printemps 2016 avec Laurent Champoussin.
We present insight into the exhibition at Institut hongrois, which shows collages and photo compositions in Hungarian art. The techniques were first developed in the Bauhaus period and then further during surrealismus. The most important Hungarian art pioneers of this style include Lajos Kassák, Endre Bálint, Dezső Korniss, and Lajos Vajda, selected works of whom are presented.
