Daniel Buchholz Gallery Cologne opened a double exhibition in both its Cologne galleries in June. Cheyney Thompson’s ‘10M/1000 ML/10 L’ are on display at Neven-DuMont-Straße 17 and ‘International Corrosion Fatigue’ by Sam Lewitt is on show at Elisenstraße 4-6, also in Cologne, making for a star-studded warm-up before they seamlessly head over to Art Basel.
We are looking forward to seeing ‘Pavilionesque’ over there, Polish artist Paulina Olowska first Swiss solo show at Kunsthalle Basel. Paulina Olowska (born 1976 in Gedansk, Poland) lives and works in Raba Nizna, Poland. The centrepiece of the exhibition is a life-size sketch of a wooden pavilion hosting performances, as well as a presentation of her recent work including paintings, ceramics, sculptures and puppets.
The idea behind the exhibition concept is a life-size puppet theatre, making it accessible and experiential for all. Her latest book was simultaneously released with the opening of the show in Cologne. GoSee presents a classic video of us leafing through the first couple of pages. We also have a virtual tour of Neven-DuMont-Straße 17 as well as photos of the private view after party at Cologne’s fashionable Marsil bar.
About the book - In her paintings, collages, and knitted works, Olowska incorporates text and graphics from found illustrations or images that have a decidedly "behind the Iron Curtain" look, while paying tribute to American Pattern and Decoration art of the 1970s and its use of non-traditional contemporary art mediums such as tiles and textiles. This publication is the first monograph to offer an overview of her work. It includes an interview with Adam Szymczyk and an essay by Jan Verwoert.
Olowska, who lives and works in the Polish countryside, has had recent one-person and project exhibitions at MoMA, New York (2011),Tramway, Glasgow (2010); Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich (2009); DAAD Galerie, Berlin (2008); and Portikus, Frankfurt (2007). Published in collaboration with Kunsthalle Basel.
