Products that accompany people and to which one develops an emotional tie – that is the claim of the brand KERBHOLZ. Sustainable, high-quality basic bodywear – the underlyiing idea at ERLICH TEXTIL. Behind both brands stands the enterprise Vorfreude GmbH from Cologne. “I can understand how people must feel that come to Germany from other countries at the moment,” Eric says thoughtfully. He has worked for many years as model and actor and is in great demand in both areas. His good mood is contagious, and you don’t really have to ask what response he gets as a club animator. In his "favorite agency" brüderchen & schwesterchen, his reputation of being a happy coinnoisseur from Tennessee precedes him.
In spite of that, he seems to have deep thoughts when he speaks of his childhood. “My father was in the military service, and we always had to move: USA, Mexico, Italy”. Later his parents separated, but with his mother’s new partner, the family doesn’t settle down either. When Eric was 11 years old, the patchwork family moves to Germany, to Kirchen to be exact. A community with a population of less than 10,000 near Siegen, and Wikipedia writes about its greatest attraction: “The most famous natural attraction in Kirchen is the Druid stone, a basalt rock (…)”. It quickly makes you think, that Kirchen is not on the top ten list of places you want to visit. For a teenager there are certainly more exiting places.
“In the beginning, I really thought about running away,” Eric says laughing, “I had a really hard time with the language and, therefore, first had to go to elementary school. To me, the German language sounded like a rattle”. At school, there was a group of boys, “who were also not understood”. Mainly Turks and Italians. Which is why he is so emotionally involved in the refugee debate. “If I would have had the chance to watch English language TV, it would have made it easier for myself,” Eric admits. He found it very difficult to make friends among the local kids. Hard to believe, when you now look at the man with the mischievous smile, who is just bursting with energy.
Early on he discovered his passion for acting. At the age of 6, he had his first role in a school play. “A played a nutty professor,” he remembers. “I had bubble pack under my shoes and the people laughed out loud”. At that moment he was sure – “this is what you want again, this is your job”.
He goes to occupational counseling at the Job Center in Kirchen. He wanted to become an actor. The lady at the Job Center puckers her lips and printsout the addresses of several private schools. Whether he has alternatives? Sports or psychology maybe? Basically he has no plan B. His great passion is acting.
“I could have never afforded the private acting schools, so first I began an apprenticeship – out of laziness, not because I was interested,” he laughs. Eric becomes Industrial Management Assistant – “the worst time of my life”. He was not quite serious about it, but the period in his life showed him how unhappy it makes you when you do something that is against your nature. “I sat next to older people who mostly enjoyed talking about cooking marmalade,” says Eric and rolls his eyes. He completes his education and is very glad, when he finally holds his diploma in his hand. “I had no idea what I wanted to do, but to work as an industrial management assistant was definitely not one of my possible plans for the future”. Again he laughs, which makes him look so much younger than his 36 years.
Eric enroles at the university for a course in business management but never goes to one class. “I wanted to be self-sufficient and I really wanted nothing else but to be an actor”. Where can you work as a free athletic guy with a talent for acting? Eric moves to Spain where it is sunny. “At sports animation courses and during the evening shows for club guests I was able to prove my talents,” he says. He makes it all the way to team leader and into the management program of a travel agency in Switzerland.
He meets a German lady there, and tells her about his big dream of becoming an actor. “She knew the theater academy in Cologne well and convinced me to write to them,” he remembers. He signs up for a workshop that he pays for with money he earned in Spain. The workshop changes his whole life. “It became clear to me again that I wanted to do nothing else,” he says and his enthusiasm can clearly be seen. The academy waived the entry exams and advises him to go through the training. Four years later his dream comes true. In the meantime he lives in Cologne. The people there are much more open-minded and more friendly, and the flair is more Mediterranean than German.
“Somehow I am still the nutty professor with the bubble pack under my feet,” he says grinning. Telling stories, taking others into another world. That is the fascinating part of his job.
“That is also what I like about modeling,” he says. He does not particularly like that word, but in the jobs that he does for brüderchen & schwesterchen, it’s often about telling a story, about creating and projecting an emotion. “When I model, I can use much of what I learned during my acting training,” he says. Whether the picture moves or not, is not all that important. To this day, his favorite roles are playing freaky characters. Angry, bewildered men or even plain simple people. “I can identify with them better than with vain people who most of all want to look beautiful”.
However, he has meanwhile gotten used to the fact that sometimes he gets booked just because of his good looks. “Even in the theater, I sometimes play the hero,” he reflects, “but the character that I portray has to be humanly interesting”. In the beginning, he played in more than ten theater plays per year, today he can be selective about his roles. He also gets more inquiries for synchronizations today. “It shouldn’t get boring, I have lots of ideas, for instance to direct. I just don’t like standstill,” he says. There is only a trace of an American accent to be heard.
In modeling, he also likes the constant new challenges. “It’s like a grab bag,” Eric says. “The first casting for brüderchen & schwesterchen was for the manufacturer of a fabric softener,” he remembers, “I went there with freshly washed hair that was still soaking wet.” The client books Eric and asks the agency to tell him not to use so much Gel on his hair the next time because it gives him an arrogant look. Eric laughs out loud: “that goes to show that the first impression can sometimes be wrong and a lot depends on visual details”.
He does not feel bad when he doesn’t get the job every time. “It is mainly important that I do my best and stay true to myself. When that can be seen, I am satisfied”. Till now, he has always managed to do so in advertising jobs. Most of all, he loves challenges. He likes shoots with animals and children best, in which unforeseen things happen frequently. He is surprised by his own success as a model lots of the time. “Recently I was at a shoot where my backup looked better than I do,” he says surprised and it does not seem flirty.
What are his plans for the future? “I usually don’t make plans, but I might go back to the US for a while,” he answers. German television may be interesting for him too, if it is a good project. You can’t force things, you have to stay truthful, then you don’t need firm goals. “Actually, I have fulfilled my biggest dream already – I can live off my dream jobs”.
